Mesh-29 w/ Rob McCulloch @ Whitworth Park Band Night 19/09/07 (gig review)
Opening act Rob McCulloch is a strong singer songwriter from Bolton who has recently produced a very sound album. He sings well and plays with a lot of energy, yet stage presence is not his forte, and he does not captivate the (albeit very difficult) student only audience.
Mesh-29 take over after a short 20 minute set. They, on the other hand, are on fire. Their new drummer seems to have settled in fine, and the introduction to their set – an instrumental piece that smoothly transcends into popular track “Waiting for the Day” is powerful, strong and well executed.
Song after song, including the band’s chart hit “Over the Barricade” and the beautiful “My Brand New Lullaby” sound fantastic.
Set finisher, “Cigarette” ends like the set began – hard, fast playing with the artists battering their instruments – especially the pianist who, it seems, is so taken by the music he can’t manage either with his shoes on or sat on his piano stool.
By the end of the set people have moved from the bar into the music room and the band have definitely acquired a few new fans. It is very difficult to dislike Mesh-29. Their songs are performed with such energy and such passion – all three members truly throw themselves into their performance and their music. What an enjoyment to watch.
